Games and digital play has become a major form of past time activity within the modern society. As a dominant cultural phenomenon of the current era, games are also studied from the academic perspective. We know a lot about games, the game playing cultures, players and their motivations, histories of digital play as well as various other topics within the phenomenon. One angle has been under-represented: studying games as created.

What kind of principles game making follow and how should we study that? Game researcher Annakaisa Kultima will discuss her 10-year research on the creative processes of game developers and the changes within a decade of game making.

As usual the events are free and no previous knowledge of the topic is required and the events are free. Annakaisa is a super-engaging speaker: highly recommended!

Being a successful game artist means more than being just a talented visual designer. Understanding the technical process, knowing the intent of gameplay and story, and being aware of the aesthetics of what is being created will make you part of the bigger picture and aid you in becoming an excellent decision-maker and team leader.

On August 24th, three lead artists from Insomniac Games opened a discussion at the Gnomon School of Visual Effects that broke down the stigma of artists feeling removed from game design. The panel was moderated and audience participation was encouraged. Whether you’re a budding game artist, an industry professional, or simply curious about how your favorite games are made, there is information for everyone. The panel offers tips to help you think more like a game designer and how to work better as a team member, as well as how to stay focused on the end goal of a project while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. The panelists also explain what companies like Insomniac Games look for in candidates and offer portfolio advice for those looking to break into the industry.
