For PCs without a sound card or those that lack a free upgrade slot, getting proper OPL2 FM synth support can be elusive. But thanks to Serdashop you can make that happen over the printer port!

The OPL2LPT is a sound device dongle for the printer or parallel port. It comes with a YAMAHA OPL2 FM chip and a software driver for DOS. In this video we are going to the extreme and using it with a Core i7 and MS-DOS 6.22 and a bunch of games.

Some games ran too fast and would glitch out the audio, but disabling the L1 cache got them going. But then some games ran too slow for the music to be smooth. You will have much better results with an older DOS laptop.

Time to break the Zelda/Mario mold and try out a different IP.

I thought this game would be very appropriate for a few reasons:

* The 8-bit Master System version in particular is 25 years old as of this upload date.
* It's the first game I am focusing on that isn't from Nintendo.
* There's not many reasonable 16-Bit differences other than:
Original 16-bit vs GBA 15th Anniversary & 2013 iOS/Android

Unlike Super Mario 64 vs Super Mario 64 DS,
8-bit Sonic 1 movement mechanics is 97% faithful so the only real change (which covers 45 minutes) is the level design.. and obviously boss battles.
A lot of the levels had minor tweaks to either reduce difficulty or adjust the lower resolution to minimise blind jumps. Few of them had huge redesigns that it was hard to...

I'm continuing to explore Yamaha's FM chips. This time, we're exploring the YM3812, AKA OPL2. The OPL2 was found on major PC soundcards in the early and late 90's. Namely, it was included with the Adlib and Soundblaster cards.
This quick demo video shows off my dedicated hardware YM3812 Video Game Music player. All sounds are synthesized in real time on a genuine YM3812 driven by a Teensy 3.5. I also thought I'd show some of the output waveforms on my oscilloscope simply because it looks cool.

Music: my yet untitled song on the adlib tracker ][.
Hardware: Yamaha YMF744 DS-XG with the genuine OPL3 built in (compatible with older OPLs).

YM3526 OPL: 9 voices, 2 ops. mono, sine wave. Used in the MSX-AUDIO and the C64 Sound Expander.
YM3812 OPL2: 9 voices, 2 ops, mono, 4 different waveshapes. Used in the famous Adlib Music Synthesizer Card and some arcade machines.
YMF262 OPL3: 18 voices (2op mode) or 6 4op + 6 2op voices (4op mode), stereo, 8 different waveshapes. Used in many PC PCI/ISA cards.
YMF289 OPL3: low-power version of above.
YMF278 OPL4 (not shown): basically a package of the OPL3 and a 24-voices sampler, which is unrelated to the FM synthesis.
